What is so great about Possum Trot, anyway?

It had been six hours since I got into my car on the way to Tennessee. I heard about Possum Trot for years but had never taken the opportunity to visit. My man and I decided we would head to the hills to find out what it was all about.

On the way up the gravel road and around the bend we were greeted by at least six of them…dogs that is. They looked at us as though they weren’t sure if we were friend or foe and followed us until we stopped the car at the entrance to the town. I wasn’t too sure I wanted to get out so I rolled the window down and started talking to the dogs.

I knew I was ok when they started wagging their tails. Soon we were surrounded by them all trying to get our attention for a pat on the head or a good back rub.

There was no one to be seen on the main street of town. It seemed everyone was gone for the afternoon or were they taking a siesta?

We unpacked our bags in “Big Nose Kate’s” room up over the saloon and decided to stroll around town. That’s where we found some good people who welcomed us with open arms.

That evening we sat with folks and chewed the fat around the fire and in the saloon…a friendly game of pool, a little country music…and lots of good conversation. I even dared to pull out a walking stick my sweetie found for me at the Big South Fork National Park nearby. Experienced eyes gave me a few hints on how to whittle. We solved the world’s problems and had a good time doing it.

Breakfast was a treat with Ernie as the cook. He had a little music going and turned a regular breakfast into a culinary delight! Once again, good conversation and a hot cup of coffee made me want to linger to soak in the experience. Ernie pulled out his guitar at the end of breakfast for a few well chosen songs from the past.

The shoots were focused and energized. People came from near and far to join in the fun. Participants were concentrating on their game and there was some serious shooting taking place. After each shoot, the evenings were full of gun talk and who did what that day, celebrating with those who had a good shooting day, who was the sharpest shooter, etc. Let me say there was some FINE shooting that weekend.

The experience at Possum Trot cannot be fully understood until you experience it yourself…and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to do that one day real soon.

We can’t wait to go back.
